Military veteran receives MBA degree from ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½ – Lincoln
Meet Ryan Metcalf, a recent graduate of the online program from the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½ – Lincoln (UNL).
Metcalf’s support to enlist in the U.S. Air Force came from a close source. “My father had been a military veteran and my wife gave me the idea to enlist in the military as well.”
After finishing his first bachelor’s degree while stationed in Wichita Falls, Metcalf decided to pursue a degree in information systems management. Metcalf remarked, “I wanted to use my military benefits to further my ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½.” When it became apparent that he needed more training in business analytics, he decided to pursue a master’s degree in Business.
That’s when his path intersected with the online MBA program at UNL. Metcalf said, “The College of Business within the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½—Lincoln is great, and their MBA program has received a lot of praise nationally.” The online MBA program at UNL is ranked 15th in the nation and 3rd in the Big Ten for veterans by U.S. News & World Report. Currently, there are 4,462 students enrolled in the online program. Metcalf continued, “The MBA program is 100% a great opportunity. You’re staging yourself for a senior management or even a c-level role.”
One unique aspect of Metcalf’s experience was his access to the Veteran’s Affairs Office at UNL. Although he completed the program online, he was located close to campus and able to utilize the office physically. Students studying at a distance are also able to take advantage of this unique support.
“They have study halls and a support network. The VA Office at UNL allows like-minded individuals to help one another achieve what others may just take for granted.” Metcalf continued, “The VA pays back a stipend for housing, books and an additional amount if you have dependents. That’s what the VA is providing: the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½ benefits.”
When asked about what advise he had for other veteran’s, Metcalf responded, “You’re not alone, and if you want to further your ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½, you’ve got to grab the bull by its horns and take advantage of it because furthering your ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ¹Ù·½ will help you in the long run.”
According to Metcalf, he found the amount of interaction with other students in the program surprising. He added, “In my finance and accounting classes, we had to come together as a group, and it became a very cohesive group. We worked well, communicated well and bonded well to complete our group project.”
Metcalf’s final impressions included praise for one of his professors. “I have had a lot of growth from my international business courses with Dr. Ibrayeva.” Metcalf also mentioned, “Business is worldwide, and the organization I work for is worldwide. I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to go global.”
